Safety Tips for Massachusetts Motorcycle Season

With the summer motorcycle season heading into full gear in Massachusetts, motorcyclists across the state are tuning up their bikes and hitting the road. To help ensure a safe riding season and reduce the likelihood of a serious accident, motorcyclists of all ages and experience levels should take some time to review some motorcycle safety tips that could make the difference between a safe ride and a potentially devastating crash.

Assume You Are Invisible

Most accidents between motorcycles and cars happen when another driver doesn’t see a motorcyclist. Preventing these accidents is a two-way street. While drivers need to keep an eye out for motorcyclists on the road, bikers should also make an effort to be seen.

To make yourself more visible to drivers of other vehicles, wear brightly colored, high-contrast clothing or wear a fluorescent vest. Always use your high beams, even during the day, and wear a DOT-approved helmet made with retro-reflective materials. In addition to your clothing and equipment, your position on the road can also make a big difference in whether or not other motorists can see you. Keep clear of drivers’ blind spots, and leave plenty of space between yourself and other vehicles.

Watch the Road Ahead

Road hazards such as potholes, gravel, puddles and wet leaves make motorcycle accidents more likely to occur, especially when they appear unexpectedly. Make a habit of scanning the road ahead for potential obstacles, and give yourself plenty of time and space to maneuver safely around them. Not only will this help you avoid the hazard itself, but it will prevent you from having to make sudden, unexpected movements that may surprise other drivers and lead to a crash.

If you or a loved one is injured in a motorcycle accident, you may be able to receive compensation for your injuries, medical costs and other expenses relating to the accident. Contact a knowledgeable personal injury attorney in your area to discuss your situation and learn more about the legal options that may be available to you.
