Massachusetts has a worrisome increase in fatal auto accidents

On Behalf of | Feb 18, 2022 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

Road safety is challenge that is impacting many lives in Massachusetts and across the United States. Much of that is related to a spike in drivers speeding, behaving recklessly, driving while distracted, driving drunk and committing other violations. Statistics are maintained to assess how many accidents there are and to try and find solutions to avoid them. The numbers for 2021 were especially troubling. As researchers and experts sift through them, it is important for drivers, passengers, motorcyclists, bicyclists and pedestrians to know what they may face when they take to the road.

In 2021, Massachusetts saw a rise of 19% in fatal crashes

According to the most recent statistics from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT), there were 408 fatalities in the state in 2021. This was 19% more than there were in 2020. It is also the worst year for road deaths since 2009. Researchers say that drivers are speeding with greater frequency, behaving recklessly, driving under the influence and not wearing their seatbelts. Motorcyclists were especially at risk. In 2021, 80 riders and passengers lost their lives. That is up from 58 in 2020 – a 38% increase.

The problem permeates the nation as emptier roadways due to circumstances have given many drivers free rein to go beyond speed limits without consequences. Massachusetts State Police says that it has seen a significant number of drivers whose speed exceeded 100 mph. The faster a vehicle is going, the worse a crash is likely to be. While seatbelt laws and road design are referenced as undeniable issues, drivers who are acting in ways that are known to place themselves and others in jeopardy is a primary worry.

Assistance can be essential in the aftermath of an auto accident

Injuries and loss of life in motor vehicle accidents are happening all too often. The numbers in Massachusetts bear this out. With the litany of challenges people will face after an accident, it is imperative to be aware of how to proceed after a collision has happened. This can help with investigating the situation, accruing evidence, determining what will be needed in the future and more. Medical costs can be exorbitant, people may not be able to work or contribute to a family and their entire future could be cloudy. Having guidance can be crucial from the outset.
