On Behalf of | Feb 8, 2023 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

Motor vehicle accidents are ubiquitous on American roadways, even around here. However, with the number of personal injury ads you see on television, you may think that our North Andover, Massachusetts, roadways are something out of Mad Max, but that simply is not the case. In fact, while surprising, New England has some of the safest streets in the United States. But, that is not to say that our roadways are safe.

The roadways across the nation

There is about one fatal accident every 15 minutes in the United States. However, with over 5 million collisions every year, only about 1% result in a fatality. This is thanks to our country’s high safety standards for vehicles.

What causes so many?

Two words: drinking and speeding. Most fatal motor vehicle accidents can be traced back to either the negligent driver drinking, speeding or some combination of both. In combination, they account for about 25,000 fatal vehicle collisions each year.

When are they more likely to happen?

With drinking and speeding, it is not hard to imagine when these two events occur more than others, at night, on the weekends and on the holidays. And, indeed, this is when researchers find spikes in fatal auto vehicle collisions. In fact, the most dangerous to be on the road is Independence Day. The most dangerous days of the week are Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and the most dangerous times of the day are before midnight and after 6:00pm.

How can I avoid them?

Unfortunately, for our North Andover, Massachusetts, readers, you cannot prevent the negligence of others. Even if you are the safest driver in the world, somehow the un-safest driver in the world will find you. So is the nature of life, but if you should cross paths, you can always fight back through a personal injury lawsuit.
